One of the greatest joys of the summer months has always been spending time outside, and beyond any doubt, one of the most popular ways to do it is swimming. Being the owner of an in-ground pool is not just a great way to enjoy that time outside with friends and family, but do so from the privacy of your own home. Unfortunately, having a pool of your own also means taking the time and money to properly maintain it, and keep the water clean. To that end, Hayward offers pool filters that utilize the latest in filtering technology that are simple to operate and relatively low maintenance. As they are molded from tough and durable, colorfast thermo-plastic they are fit to deliver all-weather performance with only the minimum requirements for care.
Our top pick is the SP1580x15, which hits the sweet spot between price and performance. You can read our review or buy it here on Amazon.
Hayward pumps are available with a few different filter options, and it is worth understanding the differences before you buy.
Sand Filtering
As the name implies, this model extracts impurities from water using sand, and can trap debris and particles that are as small as 20-40 microns. To unload its water waste, it must simply be backwashed (run in reverse).
Cartridge Filtering
As the cartridge filters have a larger surface area than sand, these filters allow for fewer clogs and even easier maintenance. Additionally, they also run at a lower pressure than sand, which translates to more flow and turnover, and less backpressure on the pump. If you decide to go with a cartridge filter, be aware that they should be cleaned once or twice a season by hosing off the cartridge element itself. Some elements trap debris are slightly more efficient than sand, as they can trap debris that is as small as 10-15 microns.
D.E. Filtering
Diatomaceous Earth consists of the mined and fossilized exoskeletons of small diatoms, and makes up the filtration apparatus for D.E. Filters. These micro-exoskeletons are used to coat grids in the filter’s housing, and can catch debris that is as small as only 2-5 microns across. Once the pressure rises in the filter, it is backwashed (in the same way that a sand filter is), and then ‘recharged’ with more D.E powder.
Regardless of which filter you feel will be suit your needs, Hayward pool pumps offer choices which are durable, built to last, and low maintenance. As Hayward pool pumps are also known for their energy efficiency, over the long run using one will also save you on energy bills as well. While owning an in-ground pool is a great way to enjoy the warmth and long hours of the summer months, cleanliness and sanitation must always come first. To that end, these pumps are a great way to keep your pool in tip top shape.
