Considerations for Purchasing Above Ground Pool Pumps

Above ground pool pumps are the backbone of water filtration systems. The pump has the onerous task of withdrawing dirty pool water, forcing it through the sand or cartridge filter then returning it back to the pool. When purchasing a replacement pump there are several need-to-know calculations that will help you determine which is the right model for your pool. Foremost is the number of gallons that must be pumped in order to affectively circulate the entire contents of the pool. This is easily accomplished with the following formulas, depending on the shape of your pool.

Rectangular pools

Depth x length x width x 7.5

Round pools

Depth x diameter x diameter x 5.9

Oval pools

Sshort diameter x long diameter x depth x 5.9.

The three most popular above ground pool pump manufacturers are Sta-Rite, Hayward, and Pentair, but they are not the only makers of quality pumps. There are several different models in every manufacturer’s line designed for specific pool sizes and filtration needs. These are rated by HP (horse power) and performance. The flow rate is measured in GPM (gallons per minute) and the amount of head (the distance the water must travel through the pipe from the pool to the pump). An ideal pump will circulate all of the water within 8 hours. The second step is to divide the number of gallons by 8. This gives you the number of GPH (gallons per hour). Further divide this number by 60 to calculate the GPM.

Most above ground pool pumps are situated right below the skimmer in the pool wall. Some pools are constructed with a center main drain in the floor of the pool. In either case, determine the number of feet of pipe used to suction the water from the pool to the pump. This is a good approximation of the total resistance to flow, also known as the amount of head measured in feet your pump must move.
Swimming pool pump specifications usually list the GPM versus Feet of Head. Look for a pump that has your numbers within its range of operation. Always select the higher horse power pump rating when your numbers are above any particular pump’s flow rate. Too small a pump will not effectively circulate the pool water and therefore fail to keep the water clean.

The newest pump series from Hayward is the Power-Flo LX. These high-performance models are specifically designed for above ground swimming pools. The heavy duty motor provides dependable and quiet performance, and super-sized debris basket helps keep you in the water enjoying your pool rather than working hard to maintain it. The Power-Flo LX models range in price from around $190 for 3/4-HP to $210 for a 1-1/2 HP pump. They also carry a 1-HP 2-Speed Matrix pump for approximately $320.

Sta-Rite high quality pumps are exceptionally powerful and quiet. They feature Dura-Glas construction as used on all of their best pumps. The rugged polymer design is corrosion-proof and the top discharge fits most filters. A clear lid quickly allows you to see when the basket needs emptied. Sta-Rite models are competitively priced at about $200 for a 3/4-HP, $210 for a 1-HP, and $218 for a 1-1/2HP pump.

Pentair Dynamo pumps are efficient and remarkably reliable, setting the highest standards in hydraulic engineering. Minimal water turbulence and friction allows for greater performance and longer life. This, in turn, effectively circulates the entire pool water using a lower horse power motor. Pentair Dynamo pumps can be found on the market for around $190 for a 1-HP and $200 for 1-1/2 HP.

Always carefully consider the warranty each manufacturer provides along with the ease of return from the point of purchase. Although it is rare for new above ground pool pumps to fail at the outset, it can happen and a simple return policy makes for less stress and more time spent enjoying your swimming pool. With the above simple considerations, finding the ideal pump will be quick and painless.
